Description
Minute books provide a glimpse into a typical day in court. Events were recorded in real time and then transferred from minute books to the appropriate deed book, court order book, order book, etc. Since minute books were used in the day-to-day activities of court, they house a general array of information, possibly not found elsewhere. Often times deciphering the handwriting in minute books can be quite challenging, due to how fast the information had to be taken down. It is interesting to note what sentences have been crossed through, or even in some instances whole pages.
Information found in minute books often pertained to civil and criminal suits, guardianship and administrators, deed recordings, naturalization registrations, court fees, and appointments of county officers. Minute books are thus a rich source of information regarding circuit court activity. The Augusta County Circuit Court Minute Books also cover a key time frame not only in the history of Augusta County and Virginia’s history, but also in what would later become the United States.
