This Index was meticulously compiled by Woodrow Clay Hamilton, Jr.
The Augusta County Vestry was the entity that presided over the communal fundraising and expenditure in the absence of an established town council or incorporated city. With its formation, “twelve of the most able men of the Parish” were responsible for upholding order and overseeing the care of the more impoverished members of the county.
The Vestry’s various civil functions included the collection of local taxes and the responsibility for impoverished individuals within the Parish, maintaining property boundaries, road maintenance, and taking on the responsibility of placing orphaned children in apprenticeships, so they could learn a trade to support themselves.
This historical record sheds light on members of the community that may or may not have been mentioned prominently before. It showcases the struggles of members of society who have been placed in vulnerable positions, and the efforts of the community to support these individuals with the resources available to them.
